It's so funny the reaction I get when I tell people that I teach burlesque. Some people will do a double take. Others will react with what I refer to as "saucer eyes." While some will get red, lean in close and whisper- "I've always wanted to try that."
Although people THINK Americans are very liberal, we're actually quite Puritanical and prudish in our ideas about expressing sexuality and femininity. And maybe that's why most women are intimidated the first time they come into one of my classes. But my burlesque classes give women a safe environment to be WOMEN and feel free to express their feminine side. Within a few minutes, they are feeling much more at ease and comfortable in their own skin. And I know for a fact, there is nothing sexier than a woman who is confident and exudes that energy from the inside out.
I always express to my burlesque students that the goal is not to be perfect or look just like anyone else. The idea is to be comfortable enough to express your own individuality through dance. I teach you the dance moves as "forms", and then you are free to add your own personality & pizzazz.
So what IS Burlesque??? Burlesque is a form of musical & theatrical parody that started in France during the 17th century. Most people identify classic burlesque with the big feather fans and corsets. Modern burlesque became popular in the US in the 20th century as a cabaret show with dancing, comedy, and sometimes striptease.
Today, NEO-burlesque is more a form of on-stage performance or a means to get in shape through dance, flexibility training, and agility with props like chairs, canes, gloves, boas, hats and the like. It's basically an excuse to play dress up, feel elegant and glamorous while getting your body fit at the same time.
So if you've never taken one of my burlesque classes, hopefully this info allows you to feel more at ease. My classes are fun, playful, and you'll leave feeling strong, confident and a little sassier than before =)
